2020 has caused all of us to work from home, and even some of our bosses have realized that it works, and it will be a forever solution.
To some of us, this sounds great! And to others, this is an awful idea. How are you to stay productive during the day?
For me, this is not a new experience. I am the owner of over 4 self-started businesses, but I am also a mom of 3. And no matter what my kids come first. So, I had to find a way to get the work done from home, to still be there for my kids.
And honestly, productivity was my biggest struggle. I mean why not work from bed, why not have a pajama day or binge your favorite series over lunch. It is really difficult and don’t think you are the only one with this struggle.
This is the number 1 and most important tip. Get up and get dressed. Do not touch your work or emails while in bed. Get dressed, I know it feels stupid, getting all dressed up and nowhere to go. But your home is your office now and sweatpants are definitely not workspace attire.
By preparing as if it was a normal day and getting dressed and prepared for work, your body will react to get ready and be productive like you have trained it your whole life to be.
Create a workspace
Like I just said, don’t work from bed. That does not mean the couch is the next best option, that is also off-limits.
Create a workspace for yourself. Put a desk somewhere with nice light and that is maybe a bit quieter than your living room. Also, decorate it, make it your space like you would’ve made at the office. And don’t use this area for other things like hobbies, this is your WORKspace.
And very important, keep it neat and tidy. Productivity is always better in an organized environment.
This one is REALLY difficult, especially for me who wants to get a lot done. I almost feel like there aren’t enough hours in a day.
But do not throw in the washing and work, or do dishes in your 10-minute break. Schedule time for that during the day.
Let everybody know you’re working.
Let your family, friends, and whoever may bother you, know what time you will be working. This makes it much easier not to get distracted. A tip here, if you and your loved one both work from home, try and set up a schedule to work at the same time.
Schedule and plan your day.
At the end of each day make a list of what needs to be done the next day. Be realistic and don’t overload yourself with work.
It is great to plan but create timeslots for yourself. Give each task a timeslot and only focus on that task in that period. If you have extra time left, you can use it to complete a task that took a bit longer.
Also schedule in breaks to go outside, get some fresh air, lunch, and that laundry that needs to be done.
And that’s the basics. There are tons of little things you can do to better your productivity but first focus on your basics.
Yes, there are still going to be unproductive days.
And you know what? It’s OKAY!
Don’t be so hard on yourself. Not all your days were productive at the office as well.
